When it comes to risk factors for UTIs in women, sexual activity can be a big one. Since the opening of the urethra is close to the vagina and clitoris, fingers, mouths, and penises can transfer bacteria around the area which can work their way into the urethra and result in infection. But don’t panic yet—we’ve got tips so you can still get hot and sweaty without fretting about it resulting in a UTI.
Common activities which can lead to UTIs
Sexual activity isn’t the only risk factor when it comes to UTIs though. Exercise can play a role as well. Not the actual act of exercising but the bacteria breeding ground that gets created in our undergarments. Most bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments and sex and exercise are great examples of these. It’s important to take hygiene seriously if you want to keep the bacteria away.
We’re going to dive into some quick tips that don’t take a lot of brainpower or effort which may save you from getting a UTI.
Sex/UTI prevention tips:
- Pee before you get busy. Most of us have heard to urinate after sex to flush out any bacteria that may be trying to multiply, but some experts also suggest going before to prevent the possibility. This helps to eliminate the bacteria in the bladder.
- Wash up. Washing the genital area with warm water may reduce the risk of bacteria entering the urethra. Be careful to avoid douching though, as it can be harmful and actually increase the risk of UTIs.
- If you’re participating in self-pleasure—and we’re all for this—be sure to practice the above steps and add in washing your hands or any toys you’ll be using.
- Consider your contraceptive usage. If you’re using a diaphragm or spermicide as a form of contraceptive, be aware that these may increase your risk for UTIs. If you’re noticing an increase in UTIs or are prone to getting them, it might be a good idea to chat with your doctor and see if there’s a better option for you.
Exercise/UTI prevention tips:
- Consider the fabric. Most people prefer synthetic clothing to exercise in due to its ability to dry quickly and wick moisture. Cotton is a bit more breathable and may be a better option for some. If you want something that dries fast, isn’t synthetic, but costs a bit more you could consider merino wool, which comes from sheep in Australia and New Zealand. It’s not itchy, regulates temperature, is breathable, and is odor resistant—yay! It’s also extremely sustainable.
- Ditch your sweaty clothes. After you finish your sweat session, it’s best to get out of those clothes ASAP—you’ve just created a breeding ground for bacteria after all. Hop in the shower and put on a fresh, breathable outfit when you’re done.
