Terms worth knowing
- Micrograms per litre (ug/L) vs milligrams (mg)
- Water levels are reported in micrograms per litre, a millionth of a gram in a litre. Supplement and prescription doses are in milligrams, a thousand times larger. Mixing the two units is the most common way lithium numbers get misread.
- Orotate vs carbonate
- Two salts that carry lithium. Carbonate is the prescription form, given in hundreds of milligrams. Orotate is sold as a supplement in microgram-to-low-milligram amounts of elemental lithium. The salt changes the dose scale, not the element.
- HBSL vs the 60 ug/L threshold
- A health-based screening level (HBSL) is a non-regulatory reference value used to flag a level worth a closer look. The 60 micrograms per litre figure often quoted for drinking water is one such screening value, not a legal limit and not a safety cliff.
- Measured vs modeled
- A measured value comes from a sample of that specific water source. A modeled value is estimated from nearby wells and geology. Modeled numbers are useful for a regional picture and should not be read as your tap.
- Association vs causation
- An association means two things move together across a population. Causation means one produces the other. Most lithium and brain research to date is associational, which is why the wording in these pieces stays careful.
- Non-detect
- The lab looked and found nothing above its detection limit. It means below that limit, not necessarily zero, and the limit differs between labs.
Common questions
How much lithium is in tap water?
Most United States water supplies fall somewhere between a non-detect and roughly 60 micrograms per litre, with a long tail of higher readings in a few regions. That is thousands of times less lithium than a prescription dose. The lookup tool shows the measured or modeled figure for your city with the national range beside it.
Is lithium an essential nutrient?
It is not formally classified as essential. Some researchers argue it behaves like a trace element because animal studies show effects at very low intakes, but there is no established requirement and no recommended intake. The Foundations pieces walk through both sides.
Does a water filter remove lithium?
Standard activated-carbon pitcher filters are not designed to remove dissolved lithium and generally leave it in place. Reverse osmosis and distillation do reduce it. The water and diet section covers what each method does.
What does the dementia research actually show?
Studies comparing regions with different lithium levels in drinking water have reported lower dementia rates where levels are higher, and other studies have found nothing. These are population comparisons, not trials, and the one randomized human trial in older adults did not find a cognitive benefit. The evidence section lays out each study and what it can and cannot support.
