Perimenopause doesn’t start with hot flashes. It starts with your sleep.

I’m 42 and I’m in perimenopause. That doesn’t mean hot flashes, and it doesn’t mean my period stopped. It meant my sleep broke first. Here are five things I didn’t know, and wish someone had told me at 38.

Get Ahead Of It
  • 93%reported more energy*
  • 90%reported fewer hot flashes*
  • 86%reported better sleep*

*Self-reported by 42 women ages 40–57 over 3 months on the Menopause Rating Scale. Independent open-label study, NCT05617287. Results vary.

Reason 1

Hot flashes are the last thing to show up, not the first.

I was watching for two things: hot flashes, and a period that stopped. Neither happened. So I crossed perimenopause off my list.

Those are the late signs. The early ones are quieter, and they land somewhere else. Sleep that breaks at 3am. Anxiety with nothing attached to it. Migraines that started in your late 30s. A word that will not come.

And each one gets handed to a different explanation. The sleep is stress. The anxiety is work. The migraines are the screen. The fog is just getting older. You spend years managing four separate problems and never once treat the one thing underneath them.

The average age perimenopause begins is 41. The average age it ends is 51. Ten years is a long time to spend treating the wrong four things.

Naming it is the part that changes what you can do about it.

Reason 2

Estrogen doesn’t leave on a schedule. It swings.

I pictured a slope. Hormones easing down, year by year, until one day they are gone. That is not what happens. Through your 40s estrogen swings up and down before it settles lower, and the swings are what you actually feel.

And estrogen is not only doing one job. Receptors for it sit in tissue all over your body, including the parts that run sleep and mood, and the lining of your blood vessels. One unsteady signal, a lot of tissue listening.

That is why the symptoms look unrelated. They are not.

Reason 3

The early signs are the ones worth acting on.

This era is not only about how you feel day to day. It is also when other systems start to move. Those same receptors sit in your blood vessels, and in the machinery that handles blood sugar.†

Which is why I do not think of noticing early as bad news. If your symptoms turned up early, you are not the unlucky one. You found out first, and you have a decade in front of you to do something with that.

Nobody told me that at 42. It is also why we did not build a hot flash pill.

Start when the signs start, not when they get loud.

Reason 4

You don’t have to choose between doing nothing and starting HRT.

At 38 or 42, HRT can feel like a big step for something that has only just begun. Plenty of women take it, plenty start later, and that conversation belongs with your doctor. But when it felt too soon for me, I did not want “not yet” to mean “nothing.”

Red clover’s isoflavones are shaped almost like estrogen, close enough to bind the same receptors your tissue has been reaching for. A 2021 review of red clover trials found consistent improvement in hot flashes and menopausal symptoms. No hormones involved.

The shift is not only hormonal, so we did not stop there. Bergamot for the blood vessel and blood sugar side. Olive fruit polyphenols for the inflammation layer underneath.

Three plants, three shifts, one daily habit.

Reason 5

93% reported more energy. Here’s what moved, and when.

In an independent 3-month study, 93% of women reported more energy. 90% reported fewer hot flashes. 86% reported better sleep.* One shift underneath all three.

Isoflavones clear your body in about a day, so those receptors only have something arriving if it arrives daily. That is why we made it a habit and not a rescue. Sleep and hot flashes tend to move first. Mood and fog build month over month.

Root-level change takes a season, not a weekend.

“I haven’t noticed any night sweats”

“I have been using the perimenopause/ menopause supplement for about 3 months now, since I started experiencing some night sweats and abnormal periods. The last month or so, I haven’t noticed any night sweats and I also noticed my mood has been pretty stable.”

Why we built it this way

Built by two sisters going through it, too.

My twin sister Catherine and I are both in perimenopause right now. We built Peri/Menopause Essentials for the era we were walking into. It started with realizing how little women are told about the decade in front of them.

“If you can address these earlier symptoms as early as possible, you’re actually going to have an easier time through menopause and post menopause.”

Lauren, co-founder. “The more you know, the more empowered you feel, and you can make the right choices for yourself.”

Frequently asked questions

I still have a regular period. Can I really be in perimenopause?

Yes. Cycles often stay regular well into the transition, and can keep looking normal while hormones are already swinging. Sleep, mood, migraines and brain fog are frequently the first things to change. If that describes your last year or two, it is worth raising with your clinician. It is also a reasonable point to start supporting the shift.

Can I start this in my late 30s?

Perimenopause symptoms can begin in the mid to late 30s, even with a regular period and no hot flashes. If you are noticing changes in sleep, anxiety, migraines or brain fog, bring them to your clinician and ask whether Peri/Menopause Essentials fits your routine.

What about HRT?

This is not a substitute for HRT and it is not a competitor to it. Plenty of women take Peri/Meno Essentials alongside HRT, and plenty take it in the years before they start. Whether and when to begin HRT is a conversation for you and your clinician.

How do I take Peri/Menopause Essentials?

Take 2 capsules daily, with food.

When will I feel a difference?

Most customers notice a difference within the first month of taking Peri/Menopause Essentials. Some of the first changes are better sleep and fewer hot flashes. Month after month, improvements in mood, brain fog, and thicker hair increase. Consistency is key to seeing and feeling results in 3–6 months.

Can I take this with other Semaine supplements?

We designed all our supplements to work effectively together. We are complex humans, so we need different supplements at different stages of life. However, it’s always a good idea to check with your doctor if you are starting any new supplement and taking one or more medications. We have a white paper that you can share with your doctor that explains the formulation, dosage, and clinical trial results: White Papers.
